A number of children and grandchildren of mothers who were prescribed the drug Diethylstilbestrol during pregnancy, known as ‘DES’, are suffering from serious health issues.

The synthetic oestrogen drug, funded by the British government and prescribed in the UK between 1938 and 1971, was given to pregnant women to prevent complications during pregnancy, such as miscarriage and premature labour. It was also prescribed for those suffering with symptoms of Menopause.

Long Term Side Effects of Diethylstilbestrol

However, in 1971 it became apparent that some women who had been exposed to DES, were developing a type of cervical cancer (Clear Cell Adenocarcinoma). The drug’s side effects are able to pass down through several generations, with DES victims now referred to as ‘DES daughters’ and ‘DES sons’. In addition, subsequent studies have shown that DES daughters exposed to DES in utero are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical precancers and suffering from fertility, pregnancy and birth complications.

Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)

The MHRA previously claimed that doctors were advised to stop prescribing the drug for use in pre-menopausal women in 1973.

However after an investigation carried out by ITV News, the broadcaster confirmed that this statement was inaccurate because there was no evidence of regulatory action taking place to withdraw the drug by the Committee on Safety of Medicines. The MHRA subsequently issued an apology for “this error and for any distress caused to patients and the public“.

It now transpires, according to the ITV investigation, that in fact women continued to be prescribed DES by NHS doctors for almost a decade later, and the risks associated with it, were even downplayed.
