Our work in the pivotal cases in defamation and privacy in the past decade has shaped the law in the UK.
We acted in the lead case that led to the enactment of the Defamation Act 2013, as well as the 2019 Supreme Court ruling. The result was that serious harm to reputation should be assessed by reference to the impact the statement actually had. In the realm of privacy law, we acted in the landmark case resulting in more than a fourfold increase in damages for misuse of private information.
Claims in which we acted led to the closure of the News of the World, the establishment of the Leveson Inquiry and the blocking of News Corporation’s takeover bid for BSkyB.
