Labour MP for Lowestoft, Jess Asato, filed a claim in the High Court on 3 June 2026 for misuse of private information and breach of data protection against x.AI, after a Grok tool had assisted a user back in January this year in producing fake sexualised images of her in a bikini and a video relating to sexual assault. At the time of discovering the images, Asato took to X in response writing “Since I posted last I’ve had my image manipulated to portray me publicly in a bikini. Where have I consented to this? The issue of consent is missing from this debate. Sexualising someone’s image without consent in digital sexual abuse and needs to stop”. Sir Keir Starmer is the latest public figure to openly back Asato’s claim.
Asato is claiming as part of her relief: damages, a declaration of illegality by xAI, and an order prohibiting xAI from carrying out further illegal conduct. This will be the first case of its kind to challenge the use by AI platforms of individuals’ personal data without their consent as a means to generate explicit images. Upon issuing her claim, Asato stated: “My hope is that this will rebalance individuals’ rights against very large tech companies that should have put safeguards in place before they harmed women and children.” It is anticipated that there will be many other claims.
