Transitioning from BRP to eVisa: What you need to know.

By 9th August 2024 No Comments

As the UK moves forward in digitalising its border and immigrant system, changes are underway. By December 31 2024, Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will expire, with proof of immigration status shifting to a digital format known as an eVisa.

What is a BRP?

A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a physical card that holds essential information about your immigration status and conditions of stay in the UK.

What is an eVisa?

In contrast to a BRP, an eVisa is a digitalised record that confirms your immigration status in the UK. Accessible through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, the eVisa provides a convenient and secure way to prove your immigration status.

The shift to eVisas

As the UK transitions towards a modernised immigration system, eVisas will replace BRPs by the end of 2024. With this transition, it is crucial for BRP holders to set up their UKVI accounts, as this will be your gateway to accessing your eVisa.

UKVI accounts allow you to:

– View your eVisa
– Keep your details updated
– Check your rights in the UK
– Prove your status to others by generating share codes.

Although BRPs remain valid until 31 December 2024, it is advisable to create your UKVI account now. Once your account is created, you may not be able to see your eVisa right away. You will receive an email notification once your eVisa is available. During this transition period, you can continue to use your BRP to prove your immigration status.

Help from the Home Office

The Home Office has provided a step-by-step video on Youtube with advice on setting up your UKVI account. With this move towards a digitalised immigration system, it is essential to be prepared. By creating your UKVI account now, you will ensure a smooth transition from your expiring BRP to your new eVisa.
