Introducing Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Introducing Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) AIRPORT SCENE

Update by Head of Immigration, Leena Chouhan:

Our latest update explains how the UK government is making significant changes to the way visitors enter the country. Starting 8 January 2025, millions of non-European visitors will require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for UK entry. Therefore, this new system will streamline border processes and enhance security, ensuring a smoother experience for travellers.

What Is an ETA?

ETA is a digital travel permission introduced for eligible visitors who don’t need a visa or already hold UK immigration status. Once granted, an ETA is valid for multiple trips over two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Visitors can stay for up to six months per trip.

An ETA costs £10 and is linked digitally to the applicant’s passport. So, although not a visa, it allows short-term visits extending the UK’s transition to an efficient, digitized border system.

Key Dates: applying for Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Now, eligible non-European visitors can apply now for travel starting in January 2025.  Of course this includes those from the USA, Canada and Australia. This is beneficial for the large number of US citizens now looking to the UK. Additionally, European nationals will gain access to the system from 5 March 2025.  Subsequently,  ETAs will become mandatory for their travel starting 2 April 2025.

Actually, these changes build on the earlier rollout of ETAs to Gulf Cooperation Council nationals in 2024. For instance, over 243,000 Gulf nationals have, already, ETAs, benefiting from quicker, hassle-free travel to the UK.

Supporting UK Tourism

Visitors from the USA, Canada, and Australia play a significant role in supporting the UK’s economy. In fact, 2023, these visitors contributed £8.8 billion to local businesses tourism. Hence, the introduction of ETAs should enhance the UK’s reputation as a vibrant destination. Moreover, it will do so by improving border efficiency while maintaining strong security measures.
